We are looking for a confident self-starter to join our U.S. Horticulture Group as a Managing Editor in our Willoughby, Ohio headquarters.
The Managing Editor is a primarily print-focused position crafted to ensure timely delivery of well-edited print editions as the U.S. Horticulture Group continues to diversify into in-person events and digital. Working closely with the lead editors, this position is responsible for day-to-day accurate copyediting and production for three brands in the group: American Fruit Grower, American Vegetable Grower, and Florida Grower. In non-peak production times the Managing Editor also posts digital content to the web, assists in duties related to event programming, and stays current on major trends in the markets we serve.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Tracking and ensuring on-time filing of internal and external print editorial assignments as assigned by each title’s lead editor.
· Working with each title’s lead editor and Media Services to lay out each issue’s chart (map, folio).
·Copyediting, proofing, and ensuring content adheres to the MMW Content Style Guide.
·Crafting and reworking headlines, decks, cutlines, etc., to fit space and also to maximize reader impact.
·Carrying out special print/sponsored assignments as directed by executive or lead editor(s).
·Tracking and managing print workflow from final edit of articles to final sign-off of pages at the printer, managing simultaneous deadlines of multiple titles that often overlap.
·Acting as the group’s lead liaison with Creative Services and Media Services to ensure each edition adheres to consistent MMW design and production standards.
·Staying abreast of key industry and audience trends to help ensure the market-responsiveness of our print products.
·Posting content to the brands’ websites.
·Assisting with event programming and speaker recruitment tasks as assigned.
·Minimal travel – e.g., 1-2 trips each year to start.
· Must have practical experience in print production.
· Should be familiar with Microsoft Word, InDesign, and Adobe software packages overall.
·Very accurate proofreader and copy editor.
·Ability to track and meet multiple deadlines, and consistently deliver our publications on time as measured by the company’s Mailbox system.
·Eye for typographic and graphic detail and consistency. Experience in photography desirable. Hands-on experience in impactful print presentations a plus.
·Solid reporter and writer. Experienced in interviewing subject-matter experts and producing content that delivers tangible insights and benefits to readers.
·Practical experience with WordPress a plus.
·Experience in business media and/or agriculture desirable but not essential.
